Immortal 8

Kingdom phase

Publisher diary 2/8

This week we will get into the heart of the game, strategically speaking, with the Kingdom phase! This is the most important phase of the game since it is the action phase during which you will discover powerful combos.

The 1st round is played clockwise while the 2nd one is counterclockwise. For the 2nd round, the player that finished the 1st round will start. The order of play is often very important. During the Drafting phase, knowing in advance the turn order can be crucial ...

During your turn, you can execute as many actions as you want but with one restriction : each card can be activated by a player only once. The order in which you complete your actions is very important: your 2nd action can sometimes depend on the 1st and help trigger the 3rd, and so on. The 1st step of your learning curve will be taken here. You will see the 2nd one during the drafting phase, but we will talk strategy later!

Kingdom phase

Since an image is worth a thousand words, let’s take a look ! During your turn, you can:

1 ) Activate your heroes and your buildings :

Tilt the card you want to activate and complete its effect. Tilting cards helps remember what has already been played)

Example 1 :
You decide to tilt the Goan-Sul Armory to gain a Military Civilization token. Then, you activate Fenghuang (your Hero) to place a Culture token on the Armory. You decide to not activate the Phoenix Observatory because you choose to go to the military route.

2 ) Enable opponent Buildings and pay the roaming charges :

To enable an opponent building you have to spend few gold coins. To be more precise as many coins are there is Building cards between you and the card you want to activate (the later card being included). Hero cards are not counted. It is for that reason that we suggested last week that you organize your Kingdom with your buildings on top of your Heroes. The building is tilted when its effect is resolved and 1 Culture token is placed on it. At the end of the game, players will score 1 VP for each Culture token placed on their buildings.

Example 2 :
The 2nd Armory of Goan Sul was played by your opponent on your right. This is the 1st building available to you starting from the right. So you have to spend 1 gold (that you put in the gold reserve at the center of the table) to activate it and earn 1 Military token. Your opponent will then tilt his Armory and put a Culture token on it. In this example you can also enable Gorgon Treasure for 2 gold as it is the 2nd building to your right. Gorgon Treasure hands 3 gold to the player who actives it.

3 ) Enable a Wonder :

You can activate one, and only one, Wonder per turn. As the Wonders are placed at the center of the table, they are available to every player. There is no activation cost.

Example 3 :
You choose not to activate either the Hourglass or the Swords of Justice. However, you want to activate Goan-Sul War Hall. This wonder lets you execute the action of an opponent building without cost. No Culture token will be placed on it. This allows you to play a building that is too far and thus too expensive or to play a building twice (once the usual way and the second time with this Wonder). For example, you can activate again Gorgon Treasure or Goan Sul Armory mentioned previously.

At the end of the active player’s turn, all tilted cards return in their original state, ready to be activated by the next player.

Phoenix is the Goddess of Knowledge. At the end of the game, she scores PV according to the number of Science tokens she earned. 6PV if she has 1 to 3 tokens, 12PV for 4 to 6, and 18PV if she has 7 or more. On top of that, the Culture value of her buildings is doubled!

Phoenix, unlike Goan-Sul, is less dependent of the accumulation of Civilization token. Indeed, once her 7 Science tokens earned she has already reached her maximum of 18PV. It then allows her to find other victory strategies and focus on her Culture Points. For instance, constructing buildings useful for her opponents can be more than beneficial...

The player who embodies Phoenix must choose carefully his buildings. They have to help him develop his civilization while being attractive to his opponents. That way the other players will be tempted to use them and you will earn Culture tokens. But be careful not to build too much as the more buildings you own the more expensive they will be for your opponents... Unless you built the Flying City Phoenix, but too much said already ...

Next week, we will go through the 3rd and final phase of a round : the Supremacy phase. We will also see the PV phase, which takes place at the end of game. In the article following, the 4th one, you will discover more cards and the strategies they generate.
